View Royal Fire Rescue

Fire Prevention & Public Education

West Shores Bravest Since 1948

The View Royal Fire Prevention Division, through the leadership of the Fire Chief, is assigned the responsibility of accomplishing several objectives. The Fire Prevention Division performs technical and field operational work that includes fire investigations, inspections, code enforcement and public education. Duties involve various aspects of a comprehensive fire prevention delivery system aimed at reducing the loss of life and property to fire. The primary objectives are as follows:
A regular system of inspections of commercial businesses, public buildings and multi-family residential occupancies have been conducted since the early 1980’s. The inspections limit the risk to life and property loss by identifying conditions, which could contribute to the start and spread of smoke and fire. Every property is inspected on a cycle of semi-annually or annually . Fire Inspectors also conduct building occupancy inspections on new construction/renovations in conjunction with the Town of View Royal Building Department.
Fire Investigations
Fire Inspectors investigate every fire or explosion that results in property damage, injury, death, and arson to determine the origin, cause and circumstances of the fire/explosion. Incident commanders will initiate the investigation immediatly once the fire is brought under control. The results of the investigations are forwarded to the Provincial Office of the Fire Commissioner for statistical purposes and possible amendments to safety codes.
Public Education
The Fire Prevention Division is a proactive resource centre for all members of our community and through various programs we attempt to inform the public on how to maintain a safe and fire free environment. Fire Prevention Week, Hall tours, and group presentations are a few of the many ways we attempt to keep our citizens informed on the best practices of fire safety.
Plans Examination/Review
Fire Inspectors review and examine building plans, perform site inspections, and provide occupancy approvals and consult with builders and architects to ensure that buildings conform to the British Columbia Fire Code, British Columbia Building Code, Municipal Bylaws and Fire Department standards.
